Before Bethlehem exists to create an unmet need: a space where faith, pregnancy, and community meet. New families in today's world can find parenting challenging, and often move to cities without built-in support from extended families.
But we have a faith family who gets it and are also looking for friendship, helpful resources, and a more nuanced conversation to happen around faith and childbearing years.
The Church has an amazing opportunity for ministry right now: to lavish families in the richness of our faith and extend their experience beyond the pews.
Before Bethlehem is the place to begin your journey.
Christina Gebel is a writer, speaker, birth doula, childbirth educator, and a lifelong Catholic. Christina holds a Bachelor in Theology from Saint Louis University and a Master in Public Health in Maternal and Child Health from Boston University. She has authored a number of news articles, blogs, and peer-reviewed journal manuscripts in public health. Before Bethlehem is the connection her identity has always yearned for: bridging faith with the experience of pregnancy and childbirth.
Christina currently supports doula clients in and around Durham, NC; teaches Lamaze childbirth education classes in conjunction with the Before Bethlehem program, which she authored; and consults on maternal and child health projects and research.
Her spirituality gravitates towards Ignatian and Franciscan, formed by her love of the Church's social teaching and Jesuit education, and the gift and spirit of Vatican II. She lives with her husband, who is Hindu, and their tabby cat, Stella, in Durham, North Carolina.
